Hike to the summit of Pikes Peak on the Barr Trail, one of the most challenging hikes in Colorado.
There’s no doubt about it - Colorado is a place for adventurers. Featuring an incredible natural landscape with an abundance of mountains and trees, there is plenty of land to explore. For those looking for a challenge, one of the most gratifying and incredible hikes can be found in Colorado Springs. Reach the summit of Pikes Peak by hiking the Barr Trail!
As you ascend up the trail, you’ll feast your eyes on timberline, mountain reservoirs, and some of the best scenery the Centennial State has to offer. Hiking the Barr Trail is not for beginner hikers, however; it is one of the most difficult hikes due to its length of approximately 12 miles, 7,400 vertical feet gain, temperature changes, and afternoon thunder and lightning storms. Barr Trail is pet-friendly, although it is recommended that you bring plenty of food and water for them to replenish along the way. About halfway up the trail, you’ll find Barr Camp, which is the perfect place to enjoy a picnic lunch, freshen up, or take shelter in case of inclimate weather. On average, hiking the trail takes between 6 - 10 hours to reach Pikes Peak; to get down, hikers can descend the trail, catch a ride on the Pikes Peak Cog Railway, or be picked up by car.
The best time to hike the Barr Trail is during warmer weather, and with spring and summer soon approaching, now is the time to start preparing.
